Tesla might finally have something to worry about from other carmakers

In 2010, the picture looked brighter for an electric-car revolution in the US.

Tesla had survived a major crisis in the 2008 to 2009 period and was gearing up for an IPO while selling the fast, sexy Roadster.

The major carmakers were introducing all-electric vehicles and new gas-electric hybrids. Numerous startup electric-car companies had burst onto the scene.

The sharing economy is booming, and these 16 companies are ideally positioned to benefit

Uber and AirBnB aren't the only companies that stand to benefit from the growing sharing economy.

Credit Suisse published a report Friday listing 16 companies that will benefit, directly or indirectly, from the burgeoning sector.

Venture capital investors say sharing firms are worth more than $220 billion, according to PWC, with their value set to reach $335 billion by 2025.

That growth is being driven by a combination of macroeconomic and psychological factors: an urbanizing population that is increasingly cost and environment conscious. The population is also tech savvy and keen on living a "useful life," according to Credit Suisse.

There are also a number of beneficiaries outside the sharing sector — such as insurance and banking giant, AXA.

'Whispers' are distorting investors' outlook on China

Renewed anxiety about China’s economic performance appears to be at odds with the fact that the country’s growth has been declining for years.

How much of the recent nervousness is based on a balanced assessment of the risks, and how much on an outdated view of China’s policy direction?

That China’s economy is slowing is hardly news. The country’s real GDP growth peaked in 2007 at 14.2% and slumped the following year to 9.6%.

Since then, it’s declined more or less steadily, dropping to 7.0% in June this year, in line with the government’s target.

Jessica Lessin at The Information reports that Apple's long-term goal for Apple Music is to use it as a hook for subscribers into a video streaming service.

She says Apple is trying to create a healthy base of subscribers through Apple Music, and then it will upsell its subscribers to video content.

51 year old woman acting as surrogate gives birth to her Grand daughter

A 51-year-old mother with multiple sclerosis gave birth to her own granddaughter in North Dakota, acting as a surrogate for her daughter.

The pregnancy came with an unexpected and welcome side effect.Mandy Stephens and her husband Jamie couldn’t wait to get pregnant after marrying in 2013, but they had trouble conceiving and opted for in vitro fertilization.

Stephens became pregnant, and the 20-week ultrasound looked perfect. But she subsequently went into early labor and lost the baby, which she named Theo.

“There’s so much excitement,” Stephens, 32, said. “You carry the baby for so long, and then it’s all ripped apart and taken away. Your whole world stops.”

Mandy’s mom, Sherri Dickson, felt the pain, too.

India’s import of Nigeria’s oil hits record high

Import of Nigerian crude oil by India hit a record high of 20.373 million barrels in April, helping to reverse the drop in Asia’s imports of the nation’s crude, a new report by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has shown.

Import from India, which recently replaced the United States as the single largest importer of crude oil from Nigeria, has declined in recent months, falling to 7.765 million barrels in March.

The Asian country had in January bought 11.531 million barrels of Nigerian crude, down from 16.349 million barrels in August, 13.7 million barrels in October and 12.4 million barrels in November last year.

Its import of Nigerian crude had in December 2014 tumbled to 5.2 million barrels, prompting the share of the Asian region in Nigeria’s crude oil export to drop to 20 per cent, from 30 per cent in October and 27 per cent in November.

Interbank rates ease on cash inflows

The nation’s interbank lending rates fell sharply to 8.25 per cent on average this week from 40 per cent last week after budgetary allocations to government agencies on Thursday raised liquidity levels in the money market.

The cost of funds among commercial lenders rose sharply in the week to over 100 per cent as the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation recalled cash and commercial lenders scrambled to cover about N136bn short in positions when the Central Bank of Nigeria sought to support the local currency.

FG, US build pharmaceutical warehouse in Lagos

The United States is set to assist the Federal Government to build its first pharmaceutical warehouse in Nigeria.

The US, through the US Agency for International Development, and in partnership with the Global Fund for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, Tuberculosis, and Malaria, is co-funding the construction of the pharmaceutical-grade warehouse in Lagos State.

Earlier this year, construction began on a similar project in Abuja at the Idu Industrial Area. The two new facilities will provide more storage space for medications and life-saving public health equipment in Nigeria, the US Embassy said.

Stock Exchanges Testing New Plan To Get The Markets Open Again This Week

The Wall Street Journal's Jacob Bunge reports that the NYSE will be testing a new contingency plan tomorrow morning so U.S. stock trading can restart. 

The contingency plan from the NYSE, BATS Global Markets, and Direct Edge Holdings is that the all-electronic NYSE Arca platform would handle opening and closing auctions, the report said.

They're expected to do a test at 8 a.m. tomorrow.

The NYSE and the NYSE MKT exchange would remain closed under the plan. 

The U.S. stock market was closed Monday and will be closed Tuesday because of Sandy.

The New York Stock Exchange is under attack for the way it handled the most volatile market in years

The New York Stock Exchange is under attack.

One of its biggest rivals, as well as electronic trading firms that do business on the exchange, are criticizing the way it handled recent swings in the market.

At the heart of the matter is the way NYSE operates: Sticking with human traders at a time when computers have taken over trading, making it faster and more volatile than ever.

The NYSE is a relative throwback in that it still uses human traders, called "designated market makers," to set the price of shares early on. Other exchanges use computers to do it.

With share prices fluctuating wildly over the past 1o days, NYSE has invoked a rule — called Rule 48 — that allows the market makers not to announce stock prices at the trading open on four occasions. It did this as recently as Tuesday.

Chinese stocks end the morning session higher

In what has been another wild day, Chinese stocks have closed the morning morning session slightly higher.

At the break the benchmark Shanghai Composite index has risen to 3176.335, an increase of 0.31%. Earlier in the session the index was down more than 4% before yet again staging a miraculous late rally into the close.
