The list of missing Chinese financial executives keeps getting longer

Being in charge of a large Chinese company or investment firm might be one of the most dangerous jobs out there at the moment.

On Wednesday, Chang Xiaobing, CEO of state-owned telecoms giant China Telecom, resigned after becoming the latest Chinese executive to go missing amid a nationwide crackdown on corruption led by the government.

A series of high-profile executives have gone missing in recent months, in the wake of China's stock market crash. As many as 36 companies reported executives missing between January and September this year, according to a Bloomberg report.

Beijing-based independent magazine Caijing reported on Sunday that Xiaobing was "lost" and uncontactable via mobile phone. The report said he had been "taken away because of serious disciplinary review" and features a picture claiming to show his office has been sealed.

What is clear is his fate isn't unique. Here's a (non-exhaustive) list of some of the most high-profile and important execs who have gone missing at one point or another:

• In December, 48-year-old Guo Guangchang, known as "China's Warren Buffett" and the head of China's Fosun Group, went missing. Guo is the most high-profile, worth an estimated $6.9 billion (£4.5 billion). His investment group, Fosun, owns Club Med and Cirque du Soleil among others. He reappeared in the US after about a week spent out of contact. 
• Yim Fung, Chairman and CEO of Hong Kong-listed Guotai Junan International Holdings, went missing in November. Guotai shares tumbled 12% when his disappearance was announced.
• Two senior executives, Chen Jun and Yan Jianlin, of China’s Citic Securities – the firm at the centre of a government probe into China’s stock-market rout – disappeared in November. Their involvement in the probe brings to at least 10 the number of Citic Securities executives implicated in the investigations to determine the causes of the stock plunge that wiped out $5 trillion of market value.

The near-$2 trillion (£1.32 trillion) market for risky high-yield bonds has been imploding over the past few days.

And it has got a lot of financial analysts and Wall Street big-hitters worried. 

While that sounds terrifying, most people don't yet know what it all means.

To understand what's going on you have to know what a high-yield bond is, and to understand that, you have to know how yields work.

A bond is like a loan. Someone who needs money borrows it by issuing a bond, and if you buy the bond the issuer pays you interest for the privilege of borrowing your cash.

Crude oil collapses to a 7-year low

Crude oil will not stop falling. 

On Friday, the price of West Texas Intermediate crude oil, the US benchmark price, fell to as low as $35.92 a barrel, the lowest price in over seven years as the commodity continues to get hammered. 

Since last year the price of crude is down about 40% and since hitting a peak of around $110 in June 2014, WTI is off nearly 70%. 

This latest collapse in oil prices comes on a day when stocks were getting crushed as markets continue to remain skittish ahead of an expected rate hike from the Federal Reserve next Wednesday.

President of China Xi Jinping has pledged a $60bn zero-interest loan to Africa that will help in the development of the continent. He said this at the opening of the China-Africa Corporation Forum in Johannesburg this morning. He announced that China will train 200,000 technicians for Africa and also offer 40,000 training opportunities for Africans.

A widening regulatory investigation into some of China's biggest brokerages has set nerves jangling in a financial industry still recovering from a summer of turmoil, with fear of becoming entangled in investigations spreading among foreign investors.

People working at domestic securities firms report an ugly mood after news in the past week of increased scrutiny of the sector by authorities. A nervous inertia is slowing new business as staff members are encouraged to report their bosses or colleagues for corruption.

"It's creating a very dog-eat-dog environment," a partner at a Chinese mutual fund said. "People collect evidence on their bosses, because if they get rid of their boss, it means that they can get promoted faster."

How Chinese investors are taking over the New York real estate market

For more than two decades, China’s most populated city, Shanghai, has experienced a building frenzy unlike any other: Developers have built office buildings in the city of 24 million as far as the eye can see, including skyscrapers like the under-construction Shanghai Tower, one of the tallest in the world.

But increasingly, Chinese developers and investors are looking elsewhere to build. And a fast-growing number are setting their eyes on New York.

Chinese insurers are expected to pour $73 billion into buying properties all over the world

Chinese insurers are expected to spend US$73 billion in acquiring overseas properties over the next five years as they speed up diversification, according to a research report published on Wednesday by real estate services firm DTZ/Cushman & Wakefield.

The report says the recent volatility in equity markets worldwide would prompt mainland Chinese insurers to accelerate their real estate investment strategy, diversifying away from domestic holdings.

Forbes has released its first-ever list of the richest American entrepreneurs under 40 years old, and it's completely dominated by the tech industry in California. 

Of the 40 entrepreneurs they looked at, a full 34 made their money in tech, with 33 living in California. They included those who were either born in the US or who built their companies here.

When we narrowed the focus to only those who had made over $1 billion, the list dropped to 21, and every single one had made their fortune in tech.

These mostly self-made billionaires include founders of some of the most iconic tech companies of the past few years, like Airbnb, Facebook, Twitter, and Uber. 

Stocks are little changed

Stocks were slightly lower in early trading on Thursday morning, following strong gains in the previous session.

Near 9:39 a.m. ET, the Dow was down 36 points, the S&P 500 was down 2 points, and the Nasdaq was down 4 points.

The S&P 500 climbed back above its 200-day moving average, a signal to some traders that stocks have resumed an upward trend. Stocks surged to the highs of the day yesterday after minutes of the Federal Reserve's October meeting showed again the Fed was gearing up for a rate hike next month. 

Digital-payments company Square makes its public-trading debut today. Yesterday evening, the company priced its IPO at $11, below the initially indicated range of $11 to $13. 

Martin Shkreli bought more than 50% of a pharmaceutical company that said it was shutting down, and now the stock is up 480%

Martin Shkreli is at it again.

Late Thursday night, the pharmaceutical company KaloBios disclosed that an investor group involving Shkreli acquired more than half of the company's outstanding stock and was in discussions to keep the company in operation.

As a result, shares of KaloBios were up more than 600% in premarket trade on Thursday.

Shortly after the market open, the stock was up about 480%. 

The US economy is turning into a nightmare for recruiters

The US economy is turning into a nightmare for recruiters: They just can't find enough qualified people to fill jobs.

In a recent note to clients, Macquarie Research analyst David Doyle cited a survey of HR executives conducted by the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) suggesting that firms are having an increasingly difficult time recruiting workers and filling positions.

Both the manufacturing and the services sectors are having a harder time recruiting people today than they did during the credit bubble in the mid-2000s. HR folks are particularly struggling in the services sector, which follows the larger trend of the US services sector outperforming US manufacturing as of late.

Apple is reportedly talking to banks about creating its own competitor to PayPal's Venmo

Apple is in talks with banks in the US about creating its own mobile-to-mobile payments service that sounds a lot like PayPal's Venmo app, according to The Wall Street Journal's Robin Sidel.

PayPal stock was down 1.5% in wake of the news.

The app would reportedly let people send payments to each other directly from their phones, and automatically take them out of their checking accounts on the back end.

While Apple already has its own payments system thanks to Apple Pay, the service so far has been mobile-to-merchant, and the mobile-to-mobile space has largely been dominated by PayPal's Venmo app, which allows for quick and easy payments.

China is about to unleash the same policy that blew up the stock market earlier in the year

Yesterday, as has been the case for much of the past few months, Chinese stocks staged another amazing rally.

Led by brokerage firms, the benchmark Shanghai Composite put close to 2%, extending the indice’s recovery from this year’s low to 28%.

World's biggest shipping company: Global economic growth is even worse than it looks

The CEO of the biggest shipping company on earth is pretty much as exposed to global growth as anyone gets, and he's got a worrying message for the world.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Moeller-Maersk CEO Nils Smedegaard Andersen suggested that consensus forecasts for global growth are still too strong, despite already being trimmed from more optimistic levels earlier this year.

Just days ago the company announced that it was slashing 4,000 jobs, reporting a major profit slump.

Facebook hits an all-time high after earnings beat

Facebook stock hit an all-time high after-hours after the company reported its Q3 earnings, beating analyst expectations on the top and bottom line.

Here are the most important numbers:

• Revenue: $4.5 billion vs. analyst expectations of $4.37 billion, up 41% year-over-year.
• Adjusted EPS: $0.57 vs. analyst expectations of $0.52.
• MAUs: 1.55 billion monthly active users vs. 1.52 billion expected.

The after-hours stock was up nearly 5% initially, dipped down to +2%, and settled around 4% after the earnings call. At about 107.7, Facebook's stock is at a new all-time high and shares are up roughly 25% since mid-August.

None of the numbers reported in the release were hugely surprising. Its expenses were up 68% year-over-year, but the company had previously said that it plans to invest heavily this year. Also as expected, Facebook saw an increase in the percentage of its revenue coming from mobile.

One of the world's biggest banks still doesn't know where it should be based

The bank said on Monday that its review into where its headquarters should be based was taking longer than it expected,and it probably won't make a decision this year.

MTN Agrees To Pay N1.04trn NCC Fine

While pleading for staggered payment model, MTN has finally bowed to pressure as it has accepted to pay the N1.04 trillion fine slammed on it last week by the telecoms regulatory authority, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Accordingly, the telecoms operator was fine for violating its directive on SIM deactivation.

Surprise surprise, this is exactly what happened – once the two employees found themselves unable to return the appropriate amount into the safe, they were quickly caught by the van driver charged with transporting the amount. Hurray for security cameras, catching idiotic employees in the act since 1942!

Soaring trading on Nigeria’s FMDQ market for fixed income and fx

Nigeria’s booming fixed interest and currency securities exchange FMDQ OTC Plc (“over-the-counter” market) recorded market turnover of NGN93.9 trillion ($471.7 billion) for the 8 months to 31 August. This includes all products traded on the FMDQ secondary market as well as trade executed between dealing members, dealing members & clients, and dealing members & the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

According to a recent report in Vanguard newspaper, treasury bills transactions accounted for NGN31.7trn (34%) of the total trading; repurchase agreement/buy backs were NGN21.354trn (23%) turnover; and foreign exchange (forex) NGN19.84trn (21%). The top 10 dealing members accounted for NGN67trn, 71% of the turnover; 3 dealing members accounted for NGN27.9trn (42%) of the broker trading.

Major listings in July included NGN26bn ($130m) FCMB Financing SPV PLC series 1, 7-year 14.25% fixed-rate unsecured bond under a ₦100trn debt issuance programme. This came after the listings of NGN4.8trn of bonds issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) and quotation of NGN2.8trn of treasury bills. Other key listings have included a NGN30.5bn bond by UBA and a NGN15.54bn bond by Stanbic IBTC.

At every point in time there are potential dangers in the financial world. Today is no different and perhaps the major threat to your personal wealth goals at the present time is the prospect of a US interest rate rise. As such, the Federal Reserve has been attempting to warn investors and markets that interest rises are coming, with Janet Yellen going to great lengths to reassure the rest of the world that the tightening of monetary policy is likely to take place at a relatively slow pace.

Why Unilever plc, Banco Santander SA And Booker Group Plc Offer Incredible Value!

Today I am looking at three London giants set to deliver resplendent returns.

Unilever

Household products powerhouse Unilever (LSE: ULVR) has seen its share price gallop 14% during the past month thanks to recovering investor appetite for emerging markets. And I believe the business still offers plenty of bang for one’s buck as its formidable collection of top-level labels — from Axe deodorant to Wall’s desserts — provide unrivalled pricing power that promises to deliver stonking profits growth.

At face value Unilever may not appear a logical choice for bargain chasers, however. P/E ratios of 22.2 times and 21.1 times for 2015 and 2016 respectively sail comfortably ahead of the value benchmark of 15 times or below. On top of this, predicted dividends of 86.9p per share for this year and 91.8p create handy-if-unspectacular yields of 2.9% and 3.1%.

Still, I believe Unilever’s terrific growth record fully merits this premium. Indeed, the popularity of the firm’s ‘Growth Brands’ enables sales to tick higher even in times of wider macroeconomic pressure, and I expect Unilever’s expansion in developing regions to provide earnings with a further boost in the years ahead — growth of 12% and 6% is chalked in for 2015 and 2016 alone.

3 Halloween Horrors I’d Avoid: Anglo American plc, WM Morrison Supermarkets PLC And Tullow Oil PLC

Today I am looking at three market monsters investors should avoid during spooky season.

Anglo American

Another week, another round of bad news for diversified mining colossus Anglo American (LSE: AAL). Iron ore — a market from which the business generates 27% of total earnings — slumped to three-month troughs under $50 per tonne as fears over Chinese steelmaking activity, combined with rampant production rises the world over, kept prices on a southerly bent.

The mining industry remains content to keep on supplying the market with unwanted material despite falling prices, and Anglo American itself hiked output at its Minas-Rio asset by 60% in July-September from the previous quarter, to 2.9 million tonnes. And metallurgical coal output, another one of the company’s crucial yet battered markets, advanced 8% quarter-on-quarter to 5.5 million tonnes.

Anglo American is embarking on a frantic strategy of cost-cutting, spending scalebacks and asset sales to shore up the balance sheet as resources prices struggle. But these measures are clearly no march for a backcloth of collapsing revenues, a view that is shared by the City — indeed, Anglo American is expected to suffer a colossal 49% earnings drop in 2015 alone. Even though this results in a low P/E ratio of 10.9 times, I believe Anglo American remains a highly-unappealing stock choice as commodity markets deteriorate.

The US Consumer is Vital for Equity Markets

We were somewhat bemused when the Fed upgraded their assessment of the US economy at their FOMC meeting last week. Events must have occurred between December and January for them to announce this upgrade and it can only be because they expect the consumer to spend the “tax cut” from lower energy prices. They may also believe that employment gains will continue despite news flow from the corporate sector that would indicate otherwise.

At the moment, we see two competing forces within the US economy. On the one hand, the consumer and non-energy corporate sector are much better off because of lower energy prices. If they choose to spend this windfall on domestic consumption, then there is very good reason to believe the US economy will continue to muddle through quite nicely. On the other hand, the energy sector has certainly boosted the US economy since the financial crisis and has created lots of high paying jobs with wonderful multiplier effects. Furthermore, up until last summer, it can be argued that the US Dollar was undervalued and this also benefitted the multi-national corporate sector. With the collapse in the price of oil and a near 20% rise in the US Dollar, the corporate sector is now a potential risk for the US economy.

Airbnb, the $25 billion global-hospitality behemoth, may have met its match. And right in its hometown of San Francisco.

On November 3, the voters of San Francisco will vote on Proposition F, the citizens initiative that, if passed, will crack down on Airbnb’s business. In the heart of Silicon Valley, a coalition of homeowners, neighborhood groups and tenant advocates gathered over 20,000 signatures to say "enough is enough."

I have been an Airbnb host in San Francisco for about nine months. Last January I watched Katie Couric interview Airbnb’s 34-year-old billionaire CEO, Brian Chesky, and that’s when I realized that something didn’t add up.

Couric asked Chesky if his company inspects its hosts’ homes for safety and fire hazards. Chesky replied, “We want to be a gold standard,” saying that he has 100 employees devoted exclusively to safety and that “hosts verify their IDs by connecting to their social networks and scanning their official ID or confirming personal details.”

A few offhand comments last week may show a massive new plan underway in global copper investment; one that could see major consumer China take the metals world by surprise.

Reuters reports that high-level Chinese officials gave some strong hints of such a move at an industry conference last week in the southwestern city of Nanning, saying that Chinese companies may use a recent geo-strategic initiative as a device to control copper concentrate supply.

The development in question is China's new "Silk Road" investment initiative. A policy I've previously discussed in relation to the gold market, but which now looks set to impact base metals as well.

Coding is cool. We don’t know how it happened, but in 2015 it’s a fact. Even Chris Bosh, arguably a top ten forward in the NBA with an annual salary of over $22 million, thinks everybody should learn to code.

The benefits of coding are numerous: being able to design webpages, gaining a better understanding of how the digital world is translated into the internet we interact with, and of course adding a ton of value to yourself as a employee. By some measures, having a coding language listed on your resume can mean over $80,000 of potential salary value.

The third Republican debate turned into an all-out war against the network that hosted it

Reince Priebus didn't hold back.

Minutes after the close of Wednesday's debate, the Republican National Committee chairman leveled extraordinary criticism at the debate's host network, echoing his candidates on stage.

"I'm disappointed in the moderators. I’m disappointed in CNBC. … It was one 'gotcha' question, one personal question after another," Priebus said, in video aired afterward on CNN.

"I’m proud of our candidates for pretty much sticking together. I'm very disappointed in the moderators, and I'm very disappointed in CNBC."

Later, in a statement, he added: "CNBC should be ashamed of how this debate was handled."
